Roche Harbor Weddings: Your Complete Guide to This Iconic San Juan Island Venue

Hotel De Haro on 35mm film

As a Washington State wedding photographer, I have shot at a lot of beautiful venues. But Roche Harbor weddings are something I struggle to put into words, and I mean that as the highest possible compliment. This 135-year-old waterfront resort in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, WA occupies a category entirely its own. It is romantic and historic with a nautical soul. It feels like a European resort that somehow ended up perched on the edge of a Pacific Northwest marina. The moment you arrive, you feel transported somewhere else entirely, and that feeling never quite goes away for the duration of the day.

I had the privilege of photographing Brittney and Edwin's wedding here, and it cemented Roche Harbor as my new favorite venue in Washington State. This guide is my attempt to put into words everything that makes this place so extraordinary, from the ceremony spaces and photo locations to the insider details that will help you plan with confidence.

Getting to Roche Harbor Resort

Roche Harbor sits on the northwest tip of San Juan Island, about 80 miles north of Seattle. To get there, you take the Washington State Ferry from Anacortes to Friday Harbor, a scenic crossing through the San Juan Islands that takes roughly an hour and a half and is beautiful in its own right. From Friday Harbor, it is a short 20-minute drive through rural farmland and forest to the resort. The journey itself sets the tone for the day. By the time your guests arrive at Roche Harbor, they have already experienced something special, and that sense of occasion carries through everything that follows.

It is worth noting that Roche Harbor sits in what locals call the banana belt of the San Juan Islands, meaning it receives roughly half the rainfall and double the sunshine of Seattle. For couples anxious about Pacific Northwest weather on their wedding day, that is a genuinely reassuring detail.

Why Roche Harbor Resort Is My Favorite Venue to Photograph

Where do I begin? The historic Hotel de Haro with its antique cobblestone road out front. The marina is filled with sailboats and yachts stretching out into the water. The formal sunken garden blooming with color and fragrance. The chapel on the hillside overlooking the harbor. The stone grotto covered in vines that makes for one of the most distinctive first look locations I have ever used. Every inch of this property has been shaped by over a century of history, and that history is visible and tangible in a way that newer venues simply cannot replicate.

As a photographer, Roche Harbor Resort gives me more to work with than almost any other venue I have shot at. The variety of backdrops, the quality of the light over the water, the architectural richness of the historic buildings, the lush garden spaces, the docks. I could shoot ten different weddings here and produce ten completely different galleries. That is rare, and it is one of the reasons I hold this venue in such high regard.

What Makes a Roche Harbor Resort Wedding Special

Roche Harbor is not just a wedding venue. It is a full resort experience for you and your guests. With lodging options ranging from historic hotel rooms in the Hotel de Haro to private cottages and luxury homes on the property, your wedding becomes a multi-day retreat for the people you love most. Golf cart shuttle service moves guests around the expansive property with ease, which adds a charming, resort-like quality to the entire experience. It is the kind of place where guests arrive on Friday and do not want to leave on Sunday.

The resort has been named Best Venue in Washington and Best Resort Venue by Washington Wedding Day for 2025, and it is easy to understand why. The combination of on-site catering drawing from local farms and fisheries, a dedicated planning team, multiple ceremony and reception spaces, and accommodations for up to 250 guests makes it one of the most complete wedding experiences available anywhere in Washington.

There is also something about the nautical character of this place that I find impossible to articulate fully. The marina, the boats, the salt air, the character. It feels romantic and adventurous and deeply rooted in the Pacific Northwest all at once. I have never been to another venue in Washington that strikes quite that balance.

Ceremony and Reception Spaces at Roche Harbor Resort

The Sunken Garden

The Sunken Garden is Roche Harbor's signature outdoor ceremony space and one of the most beautiful ceremony settings in Washington State. Nestled between the historic Hotel de Haro and the marina, the garden is lush with neutral blooms and vibrant greenery, creating a natural color palette that works beautifully in photographs and requires very little added décor to feel complete. The garden has a structured, formal quality that feels European in character, which is entirely in keeping with the overall aesthetic of the resort. My insider tip is to orient your ceremony so that you will be backlit by sunlight at the altar. This will help avoid harsh shadows and highlights.

Our Lady of Good Voyage Chapel

The historic chapel at Roche Harbor is perched on a hillside overlooking the harbor, and it is one of my favorite spots on the entire property. Originally built as a school for locals, it now serves as one of the most intimate and characterful ceremony spaces available at the resort. For couples who want a traditional church ceremony with an extraordinary setting, the chapel delivers something that feels both sacred and deeply personal. The views from the hillside surrounding it are spectacular.

The Pavilion and Courtyard

The Pavilion is an indoor event space with an adjacent outdoor stone courtyard, both overlooking the harbor and the islands beyond. It is a flexible space that works for both ceremonies and receptions, and the water views from the courtyard are stunning at any time of day. For couples whose wedding falls outside peak season or who want a backup plan for unpredictable weather, the Pavilion offers a beautiful indoor alternative without compromising on the visual experience.

What Type of Couple Will Love Roche Harbor Resort?

Roche Harbor is for couples who want their wedding to feel like a genuine event rather than just a day. Couples who want their guests to arrive somewhere extraordinary and spend a weekend immersed in it alongside them. Couples who value history, character, and a sense of place over the predictable or the trend-driven. Couples who have been to Europe and felt something when they arrived somewhere beautiful and old, and want that feeling woven into the fabric of their wedding day.

It is also a venue for couples who appreciate the full resort experience. The getting ready cottages, the golf cart shuttles, the on-site dining, the accommodations for the whole wedding party. Roche Harbor makes the logistics of a destination wedding feel effortless, which means you and your guests get to be fully present rather than managing the details of a complicated event. It’s a true Washington destination wedding experience.

If you are someone who has been searching for a venue and nothing has felt quite right yet, Roche Harbor might be the reason why. Some venues are simply in a different category, and this is one of them.

Insider Tips for Your Roche Harbor Resort Wedding

  • Plan to arrive a day or two before and stay through the weekend. Roche Harbor is a resort destination, and treating it like one is the best thing you can do for your wedding experience. Arriving the day before gives you time to settle in, explore the property, and share the anticipation with your closest people. Staying through Sunday gives you a morning after the wedding to decompress and soak in the surroundings before returning to the mainland. The resort accommodations range from historic hotel rooms in the Hotel de Haro to private cottages and luxury homes, so there is an option for every guest's style and budget.

  • Use the mausoleum for your first look. The McMillin mausoleum is tucked into the trees on the hillside and is one of the most distinctive and atmospheric first look locations I have encountered at any venue. It sounds unconventional, but the imagery it produces is extraordinary. Dramatic, intimate, and completely unlike anything else available at the resort. Ask your photographer about incorporating it.

  • Take the golf cart shuttles seriously as a logistical tool. The property is expansive and the golf cart shuttle service is genuinely useful, both for moving guests between spaces and for moving the wedding party through different portrait locations efficiently. Work with your photographer to map out a portrait route in advance so you can cover as much of the property as your timeline allows.

  • Book early. Roche Harbor hosts one wedding per day, which means your date is yours entirely and the team's full attention is on you. It also means peak season dates fill up well in advance. If you have a specific date or season in mind, reaching out early in your planning process is strongly recommended.

My Favorite Photo Locations at Roche Harbor Resort

Every corner of this property offers something worth photographing. These are the spots I prioritize at every session here.

  • The chapel and hillside. The views from the chapel hillside looking down over the harbor are among the best on the entire property. I always try to capture wide establishing shots from up here alongside the more intimate portrait work.

  • The docks and marina. The marina is filled with sailboats and yachts that create a backdrop unlike anything else in Washington wedding photography. The water reflections, the nautical details, the open sky above the harbor. It is a setting that is completely distinctive to this venue.

  • The Hotel de Haro facade and cobblestone road. The historic hotel is one of the most architecturally beautiful buildings I have photographed at any venue. The antique cobblestone road in front of it adds texture and depth to portraits in a way that feels genuinely European.

  • The sunken garden spaces. Beyond the ceremony setup, the garden areas throughout the property offer lush, color-rich portrait settings that work beautifully at any time of day.

  • Quarryman Hall. Quarryman Hall is a beautiful hotel space at Roche Harbor Resort and is one of my favorite spaces to photograph in. Specifically, the large wooden staircase inside. The hall has a warmth and character that feels appropriate to the history of the resort.

  • The getting ready cottages. The cottages on the property have a charming, intimate quality that makes for beautiful getting ready coverage. The light inside them is warm and the spaces feel personal in a way that hotel rooms rarely do.
