A Heronswood Garden Wedding: Your Complete Planning Guide

As a Washington State wedding photographer, I have photographed weddings across the Pacific Northwest and I can say with complete honesty that a Heronswood Garden wedding is in a category of its own. The grounds are impeccably maintained, endlessly varied, and filled with the kind of living, breathing beauty that no amount of rented decor could replicate.

If Heronswood has been on your shortlist, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know before you book: the spaces, the experience, who this venue is truly made for, and the photo spots that make it one of my personal favorites to shoot.

Why I Love Shooting Weddings at Heronswood Garden

The grounds are extraordinarily well kept, and that level of care shows up in every single image. When you photograph at a venue this intentionally maintained, the plant species, the textures, the water features, all of it becomes part of the visual story of your wedding day in the most organic way possible.

What I find most exciting about Heronswood as a photographer is that I could shoot ten different weddings here and produce ten completely different galleries. The variety of spaces and backdrops is genuinely rare. Every corner offers something new, and that keeps the work fresh, creative, and entirely unique to each couple.

What Makes Heronswood Garden Weddings Special

There is no dead zone at Heronswood. That is genuinely rare for a wedding venue. Most properties have two or three beautiful spots and then a lot of filler in between. Heronswood is picturesque from edge to edge. The botanical gardens showcase an extraordinary collection of plant species, the water features add movement and reflection to the landscape, and the overall design of the grounds has an intentional, curated quality that feels elevated without feeling manicured to the point of sterility.

It is the kind of venue where your guests will wander and discover something beautiful around every turn, which makes for a wedding experience that feels genuinely immersive rather than just a backdrop for a party.

Ceremony and Reception Spaces at Heronswood Garden

Heronswood offers outdoor ceremony and reception spaces that take full advantage of the property's natural landscape. The setup options are genuinely unlike anything else you will find at a Washington venue.

The Garden Ceremony Area

The outdoor garden ceremony setup is one of the most distinctive I have seen. The space has an almost maze-like quality to it, with layers and paths and plantings that create a sense of discovery and intimacy at the same time. Walking through it for a ceremony feels completely removed from the ordinary. It is the kind of space that makes guests stop and look around in quiet awe.

The Lawn Spaces

For couples who want more open space for their reception or ceremony, Heronswood also offers several lawn areas throughout the property. Each one has its own feel and surrounding scenery, so even the more open spaces feel distinct and considered.

What Type of Couple Will Love a Heronswood Garden Wedding?

Heronswood is made for couples who find beauty in nature and want their wedding environment to reflect that. Not in a rustic or barn-style way, but in a refined, botanical, genuinely beautiful way. If you have ever stood in a beautifully tended garden and felt a sense of calm, you will understand immediately why this venue works so well for a wedding.

My clients who are drawn to Heronswood tend to care deeply about detail and intentionality. They appreciate that the beauty here is living and earned, not manufactured. They want their photos to feel lush, layered, and completely unlike the images you see at a standard venue. If that resonates with you, Heronswood is worth a serious look.

Insider Tips for Your Heronswood Garden Wedding

  • Build extra time into your couples portrait session. This is my number one tip for every couple getting married at Heronswood. The grounds are extensive and spread out, and there are so many incredible spots that you will genuinely want to explore all of them. If you give yourself a longer portrait window, your photographer can take you through more of the property and you will end up with a far more varied and stunning gallery. I always recommend at least 60 minutes for portraits here, more if your timeline allows.

  • Let the grounds be your decor. Much like the best botanical venue settings, Heronswood does not need much added to it. The existing plant life, the textures, the water features, all of it creates a visual richness that over-decorating would only compete with. Keep your florals and styling refined and let the garden do what it does best.

  • Plan for golden hour portraits near the pond or in the garden area. The light at Heronswood during golden hour is something special, and the pond area in particular catches it beautifully. If your timeline allows for even 15 minutes of golden hour portraits, your images will be all the better for it.

My Favorite Photo Locations at Heronswood Garden

Choosing favorites at Heronswood is genuinely difficult because the entire property is photogenic. But these are the spots I find myself returning to again and again.

  • In the gardens next to the exotic plant species. The variety of textures and greens here is extraordinary. It creates a backdrop that feels almost otherworldly, and it makes for portraits that are completely one of a kind. No two sessions here ever look the same.

  • The ivy arches next to the getting ready house. Lush, romantic, and naturally framed. These arches create a built-in compositional element that I love for both bridal portraits and couple images. The greenery is dense and full, and the light filters through beautifully.

  • The vine covered walkways. Walking portraits along these paths have a timeless, editorial quality that I find endlessly compelling. The tunneling effect of the vines overhead create gorgeous texture and a sense of intimacy that translates beautifully in photos.

  • The moss and grass wall next to the pond. This is one of the most visually striking spots on the entire property and one that many couples underutilize. The rich greens of the moss wall set against the stillness of the pond water creates a backdrop that is genuinely stunning. It is on my list for every wedding at Heronswood.
